From ancient Egypt, the Caribbean to Notting Hill Carnival with Debora Alleyne- Degazon!

We had a highly enjoyable Guests’ Night on 15 September, where partners and friends joined us for a vibrant celebration filled with laughter, engaging conversations, and delightful activities. The atmosphere was electric, as attendees mingled and shared their experiences, making it a truly memorable evening for everyone involved. The event not only served as a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our community ties but also to showcase the talents and contributions of our members.
During the evening, we were privileged to have Debora Alleyne-Degazon deliver an intriguing and insightful talk on the rich and colorful history of carnival. She skillfully traced its origins back to ancient Egypt, where early forms of celebration and ritual were deeply intertwined with cultural and religious practices. Debora highlighted how these early festivities evolved over time, drawing significant connections to the vibrant cultures of Africa and the Caribbean, where the spirit of carnival continued to flourish and transform. She provided a fascinating overview of how these celebrations made their way back to London, culminating in the iconic Notting Hill Carnival, which has become a symbol of cultural diversity and artistic expression in the city. Debora’s passion for the subject shone through her presentation, captivating the audience and sparking lively discussions about the significance of carnival in contemporary society.
Debora works at Reigate and Banstead Council, where she leads the REECH creative programme, a role that allows her to foster creativity and artistic engagement within the community. Her dedication to the arts is further exemplified by her efforts in organizing Banstead’s Arts In Park celebration, which takes place every September. This annual event serves as a platform for local artists to showcase their talents, bringing together a diverse array of performers and art enthusiasts, and enriching the cultural landscape of the area. Through her work, Debora not only promotes artistic expression but also strengthens community bonds, making art accessible to all.
